A toast to the young masters

On the 21st April, eighteen students from the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College’s Debating Society graduated from the Toastmasters International’s Youth Leadership programme.

This is a huge accomplishment for the Debating Society, apart from their participation in the Windward Island Debating Competition.  Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of aiding members to develop their communication, public speaking and leadership skills. The Youth Leadership programme was an informal course in the arts of communication and leadership and was carried out under the Achievers’ Toastmasters Club of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The event was held at the one of the college’s Lecture theatre. At the ceremony, Youth Leadership programme coordinator, Toastmaster (TM) Kathy Ann Latchoo and other assistant toastmasters were present. Also present was the Deputy Director of the college, Mrs. Eula Adams.

The ceremony began promptly at 1:15 pm with Chairperson, Ms. Maya Morgan, a member of the debating society.  Remarks were given by TM Latchoo, TM Arlette Miller, Debating Society’s president, Mr. Gerard Porter and the Coordinating teacher, Ms. Ballantyne.  TM Latchoo gave the opening remarks, she discussed how the programme works, her experiences with the students and what she expects of them in the future, “I expect to see you all continuing this venture in university and when you become my age.”  TM Miller gave a riveting speech on how she became a toastmaster and what a valuable asset it is for her today. She also expressed her amazement of the club’s actions, “what is amazing is that you students came to the administration and proposed the idea of this society… this is very very admirable.” The president expressed his gratitude towards the Achievers’ Club for their help in moulding his members for the Windward Island Debating Competition and for the programme. The coordinating teacher also verbalized her gratitude and how proud she felt of the students.

Before the presentation of the certificates, a speech was done by one of the members of the society, Mr. Aaron Weekes. The speech was his prepared speech that won him the prize for best speaker at the Windward Island Debating Competition. After the speech, the President, Vice President, Mr. Sujith Nedd and chairperson presented the toastmasters with tokens of appreciation. The students were presented with their certificates and books from authors, Ms. Karen hinds and Ms. Stacia M. Morris. A video message from Ms. Hinds to the members of the society was also shown.

The ceremony came to an end with the vote of thanks by TM Latchoo and closing remarks from the Deputy Director.
